Your West Palm Beach Chiropractor Adjustment

Chiropractic adjustments, or chiropractic spinal manipulation, is the act of moving vertebrea in the spine or extremities. The goal is to realign the vertebraes in your spine or joints that are out of place. This can happen for many reasons such has truama, car accidents, slip and fall or just regular daily activites.

When these bones or joints are not aligned properly, it can have an effect on the entire body. Anywhere from your muscles to the central nervous system. Without proper alignment our nerves and systems do not function at our best performance.

A chiropractic adjustment uses pressure from the chiropractor using their hands or an instrument to move a vertebrae back into place. Often a quick movement is used and comes without discomfort. If you’ve ever cracked your knuckles, you may hear a similar noise to that. This sound is the release of gases in the body like oxygen and nitrogen and is perfectly normal. Chiropractic adjustments are an great way to keep the body functioning at its highest level.

Neck Pain

Neck pain affects a significant number of individuals. Recent studies have found more than 10% of Americans suffer from neck pain at any given time. The reason is that the neck region contains many delicate, pain sensitive structures commonly exposed to abuse and abnormal stresses. Incomplete rehabilitation of past injuries, poor posture, prolonged sitting, and lack of periodic spinal alignments are some of the more common factors in the development of neck problems. Fortunately, most individuals suffering from neck problems will find chiropractic care extremely beneficial. Unlike prescription drugs, most chiropractic procedures address the cause of the majority of neck problems, not simply the symptoms. Best of all, chiropractic care is safe, natural, and noninvasive… no side effects allowed!

Back Pain

Mid Back Pain

If you’re suffering from lower back pain you’re not alone. More than 80% of North Americans will at some time in their life suffer from the disabling confines of lower back pain.

According to experts, lower back pain is the number one disability culprit in workers’ compensation claims and accounts for more than $50 billion annually in the US through medical care and lost production. In addition, the latest research shows most lower back problems which cause low back pain do not fully resolve without extensive treatment and proper rehabilitation, contrary to previous beliefs.

The chiropractic doctor is unique in the health care field in that much of the training in chiropractic colleges is specifically aimed at identifying and successfully treating and managing lower back conditions. General medical practitioners generally lack adequate training in this area and have not learned the skills necessary to most effectively identify and treat most back conditions.

The fast-paced lifestyles of today have taken their toll on the backs of America. Currently, back pain is the number one cause of disability in those aged 19-45 and is the second leading cause of missed work days. Total annual costs for back pain in the US alone are estimated to be in excess of $60 billion.

A number of factors contributing to these statistics, including:

  • overall increases in work demands
  • overall decreases in physical activity
  • increases in prolonged sitting (at the desk, in the car, in front of the television)
  • lack of periodic spinal checkups and preventative care
  • failure to seek immediate care following injury
  • failure to receive adequate treatment for back injuries (i.e. medications only without proper rehabilitation of tissues)
  • poor postural habits and lifting techniques

Our treatments primarily focus on the cause of your problems, which not only results in rapid and effective pain-relief, but most importantly, minimizes the chance of future back problems.

Adjustments

The adjustment is a safe, natural, noninvasive procedure used by the chiropractor to restore and improve health. Learning the art of adjusting is a skill that requires years of study and practice. Chiropractic doctors are the only health care professionals trained to deliver the chiropractic adjustment. Spinal adjustments by any other individual or health care professional have been shown to be dangerous and less effective.

What Is A Spinal Adjustment?

In basic terms, the spinal adjustment or spinal manipulation refers to the process in which the doctor of chiropractic skillfully applies controlled force into one or more “subluxated” vertebrae of the spine. The adjustment is also frequently used in the pelvic region to normalize the sacroiliac joints. The adjustment is usually delivered using the hands or through the use of a specialized mechanical tool.

When Should Spinal Adjustments Be Given?

Spinal adjustments are applied to certain vertebrae of the spine which are no longer in their proper position or where functioning has become impaired. Vertebrae which lose their normal position or proper motion are commonly termed vertebral subluxations. The chiropractor uses a number of unique tests and procedures to determine which, if any, vertebrae are subluxated. If subluxations are found, immediate correction is generally indicated. Since like cavities subluxations are not always painful during the initial stages, even those who are not experiencing back or neck discomfort should receive periodic spinal checkups.

What Do Spinal Adjustments Do?

Adjusting helps correct vertebral subluxations. Correcting subluxations reduces pain and inflammation, reduces muscle spasm and tension, normalizes spinal biomechanics and more importantly, can remove nerve irritation and interference which can improve overall health and wellness of the individual. Chiropractic adjustments are the only way to eliminate vertebral subluxations and only the chiropractor is trained to detect subluxations and deliver the chiropractic spinal adjustment to correct subluxations.

The Non-Spinal Adjustment

In addition to adjusting the spine and pelvis, almost every other joint of the body can be adjusted by the chiropractor. This includes the joints of the hands and feet, wrists and ankles, elbows and knees, shoulders and hips, ribs and the jaw. In fact, some chiropractors are even trained in techniques to adjust the joints (sutures) of the skull.

Like the joints of the spine, joints in the extremities can also become misaligned and fixated. Chiropractic adjustive techniques can restore and enhance extremity joint functioning which can increase the life of the joint and keep wear and tear to a minimum. This is of special interest to athletes who generally demand optimal joint performance from highly stressed joints. Adjusting provides an immediate increase in joint range of motion and also supplies the joint with nutrients, as motion is the only way to bring nutrients into the joint cartilage and flush wastes products out.

The Truth about Cracking Your Knuckles...

Did your mother ever warn you that “cracking” your knuckles would give you arthritis? If she did, we’re sorry to say that she was wrong! Research has actually shown that individuals who habitually “crack” their knuckles over their lifetime actually lower the incidence of arthritis in their knuckles compared with those who do not. Researchers believe the knuckle “cracking” increases joint nutrition and maintains joint motion, both of which are essential for a healthy joint.

Car Accident Injuries

Whiplash

Whiplash is a general term connected to neck injuries brought about by a sudden or rough impact to the head or neck causing a  whip-like movement. Whiplash generally occurs in individuals included in vehicle mishaps, it can also happen from sports or work-related injuries and falls.  Headaches and sleeping disturbances and general discomfort may arise from this condition.

Neck Pain

Neck Pain is common in people who have been in a car accident.  The ligaments and tendons that restrict the movement are torn or stretched due to the impact. If you failed to notice these injuries immediately, other injuries can result. These include damage on the disc found on the vertebrae, inflammation of the nerves on the vertebrae and others.  It is essential to have your body examined by a well experienced Chiropractor in the event that you are in any sort of accident.  Even in the event of smaller accidents, injuries may persist.

What Types of Treatments Are Available for Car Accident Injuries?

A chiropractor can treat back and neck injuries from car accidents in different ways. One of the most common forms of treatment is spinal adjustment. This involves adjusting the spine in order to correct any misalignment’s that are causing pain and other health issues. When the spine is in alignment, it receives the nutrients it needs to naturally heal itself. These adjustments also help restore normal range of motion and ease inflammation. Spinal adjustments are sometimes combined with other types of treatments to provide more effective healing. These other treatments include massage therapy, trigger point therapy and electro-stimulation, which also promote healing. Some patients might also benefit from doing stretching and exercises that build strength and improve flexibility.

  • Repetitive motion injuries (Carpel tunnel syndrome, frozen shoulder, muscle/tendon strains, neuropathy)
  • Overexertion (injuries cause by lifting, pushing, holding, carrying, throwing or pulling)
  • Non-fracture damage to soft tissues and joints associated with a fall on wet/slippery surfaces
  • Accidental impact (running to a stationary object like a wall or furniture)
  • Transportation Incident (automobile accident injuries like whiplash and impact injuries)
  • Body Reaction injuries (avoiding a near fall, sudden jolt)
  • Stress and muscle tendon headaches

Sports Injuries

Chiropractic care has received much attention in regards to its successful management of sporting injuries. Since the majority of sports injuries are soft tissue in nature and because many of injuries arise from improper body biomechanics and improper sporting techniques, chiropractic doctors have become the doctors of choice – from the weekend warrior to the professional athlete. According to an article in the June ’98 issue of The Physician and Sports Medicine, “Interest in alternative or complementary medicine ‘especially chiropractic’ is booming… active patients are running to unconventional providers to treat their aches and pains… from chiropractors and acupuncture to magnets and meditation.” It’s really quite simple. Chiropractic care – through the use of safe and natural spinal adjustive techniques, physiotherapy applications, soft tissue mobilization, stretching and exercise programs, diet and nutritional counseling, and extensive biomechanical training – focuses on all causes which have lead to the symptoms of pain and tissue injury and do not focus on solely eliminating pain. Successful treatments must focus not only on pain relief, but must address the underlying causes such as muscular imbalances, biomechanical deficiencies, improper sporting techniques, and improper conditioning, to name a few.

Dynamic Spinal Decompression

Dynamic Spinal Decompression at Hope Health and Wellness

Are you suffering from severe or recurring back pain from bad posture, an accident at home or work, or after surgery? Are you looking for a natural way to eliminate back pain without the use of pain relievers or other medications? Dynamic spinal decompression may be exactly what you need. As an all-natural and non-invasive process, spinal decompression can help alleviate a wide range of back problems with minimal risk and long lasting results. Here’s what you need to know:

What Exactly Is Dynamic Spinal Decompression?

Dynamic spinal decompression is the process of alleviating pressure from each of the vertebrae in your spine. By decompressing the disks in your back, negative space is created which can allow each disc to draw in fluids and gain volume so that your back remains aligned to alleviate pain. Typically applied by chiropractors with specific machines, dynamic spinal decompression can help with a wide range of issues that are due to natural wear and tear or even from herniated discs due to overexertion.

What Are The Benefits Of Dynamic Spinal Decompression?

The main benefit of having spinal decompression performed is that it can alleviate back pain extremely fast. A single decompression session can eliminate chronic back pain and realign discs that are causing you trouble. Other benefits include:

  • Non-invasive procedure.
  • Can be performed with a chiropractor and continued at home.
  • Not reliant on pain medication.
  • Works for a wide range of issues.
  • Provides immediate results.
  • And much more…
Who Should Have Dynamic Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression therapy is a great alternative for back pain for anyone that does not want to have any type of invasive surgeries or medications. By simply manipulating the discs in the spine, dynamic spinal decompression is great for those who are suffering from herniated discs, pain after surgery, degenerative disc disease, stenosis of the spine, or back injuries from overexertion.

Remember that the best form of dynamic spinal decompression therapy is performed by a licensed and trained chiropractor. While home therapy is available it is best to consult a professional and to learn exactly how to incorporate self exercises and lifestyle changes the best way possible.

Posture

Proper posture simply refers to maintaining the body in a position which protects against excessive stresses which cause injury, while requiring a minimal amount of muscular effort to maintain. In other words, a comfortable position which will not irritate your spinal tissues. Posture plays a significant role in the development of chronic conditions such as chronic back and neck pain. Poor posture is responsible for overstretching ligaments and other supportive spinal structures as well as exhausting spinal musculature, all of which quickly leads to the development of chronic spinal pain. Learning and practicing proper postural habits will help reduce the likelihood of acquiring back and neck injuries, reduce spinal degeneration, and help keep your spine and body happy and healthy.

Conditions Treated

Common Musculoskeletal Conditions Treated

Chiropractic has provided effective relief to millions of individuals suffering from back and neck ailments. Chiropractic has also provided relief from many other musculoskeletal complaints ranging from knee and ankle problems to carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow. In fact, musculoskeletal pain or discomfort in any area of the spine or extremity is a candidate for safe, natural, noninvasive chiropractic care. If a condition exists which is better suited for treatment by a medical specialist, chiropractors are fully trained to identify such conditions and make the appropriate referral. However, most patients suffering from musculoskeletal complaints can and are successfully treated with chiropractic every single day.

Common musculoskeletal conditions treated:

  • low back pain and stiffness
  • neck and upper back pain and stiffness
  • mid back pain and stiffness
  • headaches and migraines
  • leg pain, weakness, numbness and tingling
  • arm pain, weakness, numbness and tingling
  • extremity joint pain and dysfunction
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
Common Injuries Treated

Chiropractors commonly treat all types of injuries and recognize the unique findings associated with each. For example, it’s important to understand that auto injuries often involve a delayed onset of symptoms which commonly surface weeks and even months post-accident. In work injuries, chiropractors routinely look beyond the actual injury and address such things as work station setup, ergonomically correct equipment, and proper work techniques. For sports injuries, chiropractors often check for biomechanical and muscle imbalances as a routine part of the treatment plan. Treating the whole person and optimizing health is what chiropractic is all about.

Common injuries treated:

  • automobile accident and whiplash injuries
  • on-the-job and lifting injuries
  • sports/athletic injuries
  • slip and fall injuries
  • chronic injuries
Non-Musculoskeletal Conditions Treated

In addition to musculoskeletal problems, chiropractic treatments have also been shown to benefit many individuals suffering from “medical” ailments such as chronic ear infections in children, menstrual pain and irregularities in women, and arthritis in the elderly. Although chiropractic care is not a specific form of treatment for such conditions, research has shown that many “medical” conditions can be caused or aggravated by irritation to spinal nerve roots which share an intimate relationship with the spinal structures. By restoring proper nerve functioning by normalizing spinal structure and function, we believe some individuals suffering from these “medical” ailments can obtain partial and in some cases, full relief.

Non-musculoskeletal conditions which studies have shown benefit from chiropractic:

  • asthma
  • attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
  • dizziness and dysequilibrium
  • dysmenorrhea
  • infantile colic
  • low energy levels
  • otitis media (ear infection)
  • ulcers
